Reduce Food Waste With These 5 Steps!

Almost half of our food is wasted in America, can you believe this!?
Sadly, off the estimated 125 to 160 billion pounds of food that goes to waste every year, much of it is perfectly edible and nutritious.

Food waste is a problem because it costs Americans billions of dollars in lost revenue, puts a tax on natural and human resources, and harms the environment by contributing to global warming and climate change when food waste is added to landfills.
In landfills, food gradually breaks down to form methane, a greenhouse gas that’s up to 86 times more powerful than carbon dioxide.

Food waste is also responsible for more than 25 percent of all the freshwater consumption in the US each year, and is among the leading causes of fresh water pollution. Given all the resources demanded for food production, it is worth your while to make sure that the food we produce is not wasted.

So here are 5 easy steps you can start taking today to personally reduce your food waste:

1- Buy less buy often:
So you can continuously eat fresh fruits and vegetables without having them go bad.

2- Store well:
Learn how to store different fruits and vegetables to extend their freshness.

3- Buy local:
The more local you shop the less transit time on your produce and fruits which means they will last longer once in your hands.

4- Freeze and re-use:
If your fruits and veggies are going soft and looking a little saggy, freeze them right away and use them for smoothies and soups later.

5- Compost:
Find places near you where you can drop your weekly food scrap for compost or if you have a backyard, get a compost bin and compost at home.
By reducing your food waste, you can eat healthier while saving money in the process. It also helps our planet and it’s more sustainable!

    1. Hi Andrea,

I’m so glad you’ve find it helpful!
Indeed, as you said, it seems common sense but also easy to forget 🙂
Having a reminder on the fridge is a great idea!
Let me know how it goes and if you’re coming up with even better solutions.
      Much love
