How To Stay Regular While On Vacation

The whole point of taking a vacation is that it's meant to be relaxing and a blissful time away, when all you have to worry about is what you want for lunch.

As fun and exciting as any trip can be, it’s no secret travel can cause system-wide disruption. Your bodies and G.I. Tracts are sensitive to change, and factors like lack of hydration, change in diet and sleep schedules and more-sedentary-than-usual behavior can leave you out of sync.

Hello vacation constipation, the all-too-common ailment that doesn’t allow you to fully enjoy our journeys.

5 tips to keep digestion regular while traveling:

1. Hydrate
When you're about to be confined to a train or car for a prolonged amount of time, your inclination may be to minimize your liquid consumption, but that would be a mistake, especially if you tend to feel bloated or constipated when you're traveling.
So Hydration, hydration, hydration (eating your water, not just drinking it).

2- Clean, Plant-Rich Food:
Support your digestive system, liver detoxification, and lymphatic flow with plant-rich nutrition abundant in leafy greens, water-rich veggies, and a variety of fiber.

3- Stress management:
A tense mental state can contribute to a tense physical state, a.k.a. a constricted and irritated G.I. tract and constipation.
Listen to calming music or a guided meditation while waiting in the airport lounge or sitting in the train. Take deep breaths and regulate your nervous system any chance you get.

4- Movement:
Movement (from gentle walks to power-forward yoga flows) is essential for mobilizing and excreting toxins from the body, keeping bowel movements consistent and lymph flowing. You can even do very simple stretches between train cabins, at the airport, or even pulling your car to the side of the road and taking a stretch break for 5 min.

5- Supplements :
Supplements, such as magnesium and probiotics, are also beneficial when it comes to digestion. The former is a relaxant for muscles, including the digestive tract, and the latter helps normalize bowel function by encouraging “good” bacteria in the gut microbiome. So make sure to pack your supplements when you travel and not only that but take them :)

Overall, constipation is an unwelcome result of total body back-up. By taking the right steps you’ll encourage your body to stay in (or come back to) balance so you can feel light, bright, and bold, on vacation and always.
